Your conversation, your rules
Two tools, two strengths: mute quiets someone for you alone; block ends the connection both ways — silently, with no notification and no drama.
Mute — your peace, your business
- Mute a person and their activity stops reaching you — no notifications, no interruptions. They can still write; you just don't hear it until you choose to look.
- Mute a conversation and that thread goes quiet without leaving it — perfect for the group that's lovely but relentless.
- Muting is invisible to everyone but you, and reversible any time.
Block — the full stop
- Blocking someone ends contact both directions: they can't message you, you can't message them, and inside shared group threads you simply stop existing to each other — neither sees the other's messages.
- The blocked person is never told. From their side, things just… don't go through, the same way they wouldn't for someone who isn't there. No "you have been blocked" notice, no confirmation to react to.
- Block reaches the whole relationship: any follows between you end, pending requests vanish, and a Connection dissolves — in both directions, at once. To them it looks like any ordinary not-connected state, never like a block.
- Blocking also keeps them from pulling you into new conversations or spaces.
- Unblock any time; contact becomes possible again from that moment (history doesn't replay, and severed follows don't restore themselves — reconnecting is a fresh choice).
What these don't do
- Neither tool reports anyone or involves moderators — they're personal-boundary tools. When something crosses the line from unwanted to abusive, that's what reporting is for — use both freely.
Good habits
- Reach for mute first when it's noise, block when it's a person. Don't agonize — both are reversible and invisible.
Did you know? Block silence extends into your connected apps too — a blocked person's messages never reach your Telegram, and yours never reach theirs, exactly as in-app.
